Group Photo's - how to take good group photos and avoid the 3 most common mistakes.

Taking pictures at family reunions, birthday parties, or weddings is the most common photography we do. We want to remember the people more than the occasion. The people are the central focus. And of course group photos are often important too.

Here are three most common mistakes I've seen with group photos.

1. Line 'em up and shoot -- like a firing squad.
2. Ten cameras -- eye in all directions.
3. Ignoring the background.

The first mistake is easily avoided with a bit of preparation. Have the larger people in the back and the guest of honor in a chair as in the photo on the left. Or everone in a line, but each turns to the middle.

Ten cameras all shooten at once mean's eyes are in every direction. At my Aunt's 60th B-day celebration I pointed to each camera and yelled out camera one, camera tow, etc. Or this one, etc. Make it funny and relaxed but be LOUD!! Get their attention, besides the smiles are more genunine when you are a comediean photographer.

And of course pay attention to the background. If the event is special make sure the background says so!!! Don't crop so tight the people could be anywhere. Look for distractions, like extra heads, yellow poles, etc. You might even use props that are right handy to make the photo of the event speak for itself, like the photo below. Need I tell you these ladies are pianists??

Oh, and don't forget the informal, causal shots!!
